Actos is one of the most popular medications prescribed in the United States. It is used in the treatment of Diabetes 2, a serious condition that prevents the body from properly producing or utilizing its insulin.
How Actos is Supposed to Help
When insulin isn’t used properly the glucose that is broken down from the food that we eat floats free in the blood stream instead of providing energy to the cells as it is supposed to; this can lead to serious health problems. Actos is designed to make cells more receptive to insulin so that the insulin is present and does its job.
The generic name of Actos is pioglitazone, and it is a thiazolidinedione, or TZD drug. Each TZD was created to do the same thing in terms of treating diabetes, but the first two releases were each pulled off of the market due to serious side effects with potentially fatal consequences; both were identified as causing cardiovascular problems.
Actos was created as an answer to those side effects, but it has now been identified as having another possibly fatal flaw for the unsuspecting patients who take it – it has been linked to bladder tumors. Patients who have taken Actos has shown a higher risk of being diagnosed with bladder tumors. Takeda, the manufacturer of Actos should pay for the pain and suffering that this defective drug has caused. The Problem with Actos
Actos was introduced as an alternative to the two previous TZD drugs, which were found to cause serious cardiac problems for the patients who had been prescribed it. The medication was touted as being safe and side-effect free, and it quickly rose in popularity, particularly as the number of Diabetes 2 cases in the United States continues to rise.
But shortly after people started taking it on a regular basis, researchers in France were finding frightening side effects.
Bladder Cancer and Actos
The French Agency for the Safety of Health Products, which is similar to the FDA in the United States, made an announcement that they were pulling Actos off of the market because of the results of a study conducted by French National Health Insurance.
That study determined a marked rise in the incidence of bladder cancer in patients that were prescribed Actos.
France’s action was quickly followed by similar remarks in Germany, where physicians have been warned not to prescribe the medication.
The FDA Announced Their Concerns
Shortly thereafter the FDA announced their concerns for patients taking Actos for more than one year.
Studies are continuing, but this news leaves patients who have taken the medication at a loss, fearful for their health, or worse yet – faced with a case of bladder cancer that has apparently been caused by the medication they were taking to combat their diabetes 2.

How Can the Attorneys at Danziger & De Llano Help
If you are a Diabetes 2 patient who was prescribed the medication Actos as a remedy for your disease, and now you find yourself facing treatment for bladder cancer as a result of having taken the medication, an Actos lawyer at Danziger & De Llano can help.
Though the studies are still ongoing, preliminary reports indicate a forty percent increased risk of bladder cancer for patients who have taken this drug.
This is a far cry from a random or rare incident. The drug manufacturers did test the drug and had evidence that it could cause these kind of serious, fatal effects but released it to the public anyway.
The Actos Manufacturer was Negligent
This is the worst kind of negligence; the drug manufacturer placed more importance on its own bottom line and making a profit with a popular medication than on the health of the patients who would be taking the drug. Bladder cancer can be fatal, and fighting the disease is both costly and painful.
Not only are the medical bills likely to be very high, but in most cases treating bladder cancer is a long road that requires that the patient takes time off of work. Family members are often forced to act as caretakers, which takes them away from work as well, or else home health aides will need to be hired, and the fees for those climb quickly also.
